Trash to Treasure and Broward County Libraries are teaming up to present Trash 2 Art West. This will be a two month presentation of repurposed artwork at Broward County's West Regional Library. The show will run February and March.

Here are the facts that you need to know:

Cost: $5 for Trash to Treasure Members, $10 for nonmembers for up to three (3) pieces

This is a public library. Broward County accepts limited liability with a $1,000 deductible.

Volunteers Needed for T2T Reorganization

It's time for a face lift at Trash to Treasure. We need volunteers to make a better Center. Here are the details:

THE WORK:
We will be packing up sections, movingfurniture around, painting walls and some furniture. If you have leftover whitish paint. or bright colors, in latex, any finish , it wouldbe a welcome donation. We will be using some tools to cut wood shelves,install display fixtures , etc so if you are handy with that, you willbe a great asset. Students wanting to early community service hours arewelcome with adult supervison~ i need kids who can take direction andwill stay focused, while they are having a good time.

Resolution for Recycling

Senate Resolution 521 was passed recently in the US Senate. The following is a summary of the resoution sponsored by Sen. Carper of Delaware.

"Expresses support for: (1) improvement in the collection, processing, and consumption of recyclable material throughout the United States in order to create well-paying jobs, foster innovation and investment in recycling infrastructure, and stimulate the economy; (2) strengthening the U.S. manufacturing base in order to rebuild the domestic economy; (3) a competitive marketplace for recyclable materials; (4) the trade of recyclable commodities; (5) U.S. policies that promote recycling and recyclable materials, that promote using recyclable materials as feedstock to produce new basic materials and finished products, and that establish the equitable treatment of recycled materials; (6) research and development of new technologies to more efficiently and effectively recycle materials such as automobile shredder residue and cathode ray tubes and to remove materials that are impediments to recycling; (7) Design for Recycling to ensure that a good can be recycled safely and economically at the end of its useful life; and (8) the participation of U.S. households, businesses, and governmental entities in recycling programs. Recognizes that the U.S. scrap recycling industry is critical to the future of the United States."

Even though this passed by unanimous consent, there is still resistance to environmentally-friendly measures as unnecessary and costly to the economy. Waste Management and Publix team up to Compost in South Florida

Garbage titan Waste Management (WM) is teaming up with grocery store titan Publix to compost Publix's waste at a facility in Okeechobee County next to Waste Management's humongous landfill.

Waste Management's critics who regulary state that WM is only interested in landfilling and burning waste must be stunned by the announcement. After all, doesn't WM need to maximize it's other assets so that it can maintain stock price and insure large bonuses for executives? Has the world been flipped on its head?

Not exactly.

Publix has been seeking a partner for composting of its waste for sometime. They struck a deal with a Pompano Beach company in 2008. It failed. This was a huge threat to WM. WM controls all privately owned disposal sites in Florida south of Saint Cloud. Publix is South Florida's largest employer. It's stores are everywhere. Thus, diversion of this waste would have a significant impact on stock price and bonuses.

So, here comes the partnership. What a great example Publix has set. This shows how purchasing decisions can change the world and how a corporation can make a difference in a community by demanding something better. As far as WM, there is never a wrong reason to do the right thing.

Trash to Treasure is proud to present our line of repurposed, hand screened t shirts. We took previously worn (though sometime not) shirts and our t shirt artist used silkscreens to produce one of a kind clothing.

Our shirts have slogans or identify web sites that promote reuse or climate change. ilovetrash.org redirects Trash to Treasure's web site. 350.org is the home of all things climate change. Show your support with your Trash to Treasure Recycling Crew shirt.

Shirts are $5 for T2T members and $10 for nonmembers. They are available at Trash to Treasure and will soon be available on line. Funds go to keeping our doors open.

"Morlock made Sweater in 2010 after receiving a small stipend from a
temporary public art call. Inspired by another craftsperson who'd built the art
spot out of an old chairlift, Morlock began experimenting with discarded
materials and soon found herself with colorful rolls of leftover mylar — the
same stuff that makes Dorothy's shoes sparkle — from a Florida
sequin-and-spangle factory that went out of business. A hundred painstaking
hours later, there was Charlie Brown's sweater. And it was huge.The piece —
which will be on display at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California, through February 2012 — is 13 feet high, 9 feet wide, and 7 feet deep. It's
truck-sized.+

Dirty Peaches Clothing and Trash to Treasure are proud to present South Florida Swap-O-Rama-Rama 3.0 to be held at the Bubble 810 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Saturday November 12 4PM to Midnight.

Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a clothingswap and series of do-it-yourself workshops in which a communityexplores creative reuse through the recycling of used clothing.

CityLink Beerfest 2011 to Benefit Trash to Treasure

Once again this year, Trash to Treasure is teaming up with CityLink to put on South Florida's only Green Beerfest.

What makes it green. Working with Trash to Treasure volunteers and the beer vendors we are able to recycle over 80% of the waste by weight. We also capture the bottle caps and wine corks for our members.

Thanks to our friends over at Southern Waste Systems (SWS) for providing the recycling for the glass bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard.

Once again this year, we will work with Edge Recycling to recycle the sample cups and ice bags.

Also, this year we will be featuring Lomeg the bottle cap artist. Take a look at his work.

Position Description
Manages campaign in Miami to stop expanded offshore oil and gas drilling and to

public engagement on offshore drilling and renewable energy. With direction from

the tasks necessary to meet campaign objectives. Tracks timelines, and reports on
progress to Campaign Manager. Manages a varied and high volume workload and
requires initiative to work on own to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks. This
position will be temporary.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

1. Build a broad, effective campaign including, but not limited to, grassroots
coalition building, earned and paid media acquisition, legislative advocacy, science,
public engagement, repeat volunteerism, and development of a self-sustaining and
continuing foundation of support.

2. Execute the campaign in conjunction with a team of professionals. This will
include working with other field staff, on-line activists, legislative and
communications professionals, vendors, consultants and others.

3. Regularly report on progress of the campaign, and lead the charge for
overcoming obstacles to ensure goals and objectives are met.

4. Perform additional duties as needed and/or assigned.

Qualifications

1. At least 2 years of campaign experience, with at least one in a management
position. This should include experience engaging volunteers and building a
foundation of support for a policy outcome.

2. Demonstrated success building, and cultivating new relationships in a way
that persuades individuals to support the organization’s agenda and generates
measurable results.

3. A proven track record in grassroots field organizing and public speaking.

4. Experience in coordinating media relations.

5. A track record of being detail oriented, with good organizational skills and
follow-through.

6. Demonstrated initiative to self-motivate, to work with diverse communities,
serve as a team leader, and achieve Oceana’s goals.

7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to multi-task.

8. Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications.

9. An ability to work well with others.

Vote for Broward College's TerraCycle Bin

Broward College was recently selected as one of four finalists in a nationwide contest sponsored by TerraCycle. The contest challenged TerraCycle participants to design a TerraCycle waste collection station using discarded “upcycled” waste. Broward College students came up with the idea of creating a bin out of VHS tapes. BC's bin was selected as one of the 10 finalist.

Now, the public will vote on a winner over the next couple weeks, ending October 27^th. Please vote so Broward College can be named the Grand Prize Winner. All proceeds will help benefit the Michelle Lawless Environmental Science Scholarship Fund.

Trash2Art 2011 Zero Waste Event

Once again this year, the Trash2Art reception will be a Zero Waste event. Thanks to our partners and thoughtful planning, the goal is to have an event in which none of its by-products are sent to a disposal site.

Our food and beverage sponsors, Le Bistro, Whole Foods-Fort Lauderdale and Emerald Isle Recycling will be providing items that require as little packaging as possible and are recyclable through our partners.

Choice Environmental will collect traditional recyclables such as wine bottles, paper, and cans. Rehrig Pacific will be providing the collection carts. Broward College's TerraCycle program will be recycling and upcycling plastic cups and other items that are included in their program. Edge Recycling will assist with the recycling of the less traditional items such as plastic film, nontraditional plastics and styrofoam. Trash to Treasure will provide composting of food waste and paper napkins through backyard composting.

At the event, our "trash talkers" will help guide visitors to the appropriate receptacles to dispose of items.

All cups, glasses, plates, and napkins used during the reception have been donated to Trash to Treasure.

An art exhibition celebrating the creativity of re-purposed materials

Call For Entries begins NOW...

Excitement is building for Fort Lauderdale's Trash to Treasure Creative Reuse Center annual exhibit and competition, aptly called "Trash 2 Art", hosted at ArtServe's JM Family Enterprise Gallery beginning September 10th.

To enter, participants must register, donate a modest entry fee of only $25 per person, for up to three entries each, and bring his/her piece to the gallery on Saturday, Sept.10th, between 10am - 2pm. Space is limited, so register early. And this year, thanks to a generous grant from an anonymous source, the first 20 children to register will be free of charge.

Theme: Trash-2-Art promotes the creative reuse of materials such as fabric, tile, Styrofoam, scrap plastic, and wire and other “scrap materials that are not generally targeted in mainstream recycling programs. These materials exemplify the potential of art of interest, education and beauty while teaching the community to rethink what we have in our own backyard. Honoring all resources and using our imagination is the goal.

These materials are available to Trash 2ART participants at Trash to Treasure, Broward County’s own non-profit creative reuse center, but participants may gather their own materials from any location.

Artwork must contain at least 75% of materials that are considered “residual”, “scrap” and typically are not recyclable in mainstream programs.( E.G, we discourage the use of aluminum cans and plastic bottles #1 or #2 for art projects as these are highly reclaimable with superior environmental benefit. Exceptions will be considered.)

Artists may submit up to 3 pieces totaling no more than approximately forty square feet.

Artwork to be hung must be prewired for hanging. No saw-toothed hangers will be accepted.

Please join me for a special afternoon of music, poetry andenvironmental info at my "No Nukes Swing" Release Party - Sunday,August 7, 2011 from 2 - 5 PM.

Radio-Active Records in Fort Lauderdale is living up to its name, andhosting the Release Party for "No Nukes Swing". One might call it anAtomic Release Party! "No Nukes Swing" is my folk-rock anthem callingfor an end to the use of nuclear power and weapons around the world,The "No Nukes Swing" Release Party is scheduled in conjunction with the66th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Performers joining me at the Release Party will include my greatmusician friends Teri Catlin, Ramon Justicia, Felicia Rose, Jim Ryan,Jon Singer, and Special Guests. Poetry will be performed by LennyDellaRocca, myself and more. Musical offerings will be diverse,including rock, jazz, world, new age, classical and blues genres, andoriginals by the artists.

This is a free event, open to all ages, and is a benefit for NIRS (Nuclear Information and Resource Service - www.nirs.org)- one of the many great environmental groups I support. Why release this previously-unreleased song now? Because we are livingin seriously wacky times! As a result of the Fukushima disaster, we'vegot radioactive beef on the market in Japan, and radioactive organicvegetables in California; meanwhile goats' milk in Connecticut isradioactive from Indian Point Nuclear Plant. It's hard to believe thatutility companies are still saying that nuclear power is safe andclean! But with huge profits to be made, what have they got to lose bylying? What we ALL have to lose is our health, and possibly the futureof life on earth. With so much at stake, it's the perfect time for 'NoNukes Swing'!"

"No Nukes Swing" is a lighthearted sing-along, which explores theissues of nuclear plants, proliferation and bombs, with the catchyrefrain: "No Nukes in my coffee, No Nukes in my tea, No Nukes in mybackyard, That's just a little too close for me!"

I composed "No Nukes Swing" in 1978, and the song has been performedcountless times by myself and many other musicians, and even a choir,around the country at nuclear plants, demonstrations, concerts andfestivals. "No Nukes Swing" is part of the "Solar Power Suite", whichalso includes my original "Salute to the Sun", from my CD "Sarabande -Solo Flute Meditations".

I started performing "No Nukes Swing" more actively again in 2006, whenI learned that FPL, Progress Energy and other utilities were activelytrying to build new nuclear plants in Florida and around the country,after several decades of no new nuclear construction following theThree Mile Island nuclear accident.

"No Nukes Swing" was recorded in Boston in 1981 with an all-star,all-women's band including Jean Fineberg (Laura Nyro - Season ofLights, David Bowie - Golden Years, Sister Sledge - "We are Family") onsax, Betsy Rose on piano and vocals, Barbara Dunn Shaw on guitar andvocals, Abby Shearer on guitar, Jane Rhodes on bass, Sharon McGuire ondrums, and Laura Sue on vocals, flute, percussion and production. Therecording was engineered by multi-instrumentalist Roma Baran (anAcademy Award nominee who has produced numerous Laurie Anderson albums,as well as playing with Rosalie Sorrels and Kate McGarrigle amongothers) and Karen Kane.

A very special thank you to staff and interns at McGladrey for volunteering at Trash to Treasure on July 8. Over thirty volunteers helped us get things done that we, as an all volunteer organization, have not had time to do.

They sorted bottle caps, organized our hardware section, cut wire for recycling, built a bookcase out of VCR tapes and even picked up trash in the neighborhood.

Trash to Treasure partners with Broward College and TerraCycle to collect items for upcycling and recycling to fund an Environmental Science Scholarship. Almost $5,000 have been raised and almost 200,000 pieces have been sent to TerraCycle. Read more here.

US #1 Export to China is Trash

In 2010, the number one export from the US to China was recyclable trash. How ironic!

Discards from rampant consumerism are now the primary resource the US sends to its number one import nation. The two major issues related to sustainability are reducing the unnecessary purchasing of cheap, poorly made, highly packaged, short life-span products and the reuse or recycling of what we have.

It's easy to be cynical about the situation. We buy China's crap and we send the waste back so they can make more crap for us to buy, on credit, until they completely own us.

Reuse and recycling is not just about sustainability. It's about jobs and the financial well being of our country. Garbage is a renewable resource. We make it everyday. Internally using these resources to reduce imports or exporting them expands our economy, reduces trade deficits, and creates wealth.

Recycling an aluminum can reduces the need to import the raw materials from other countries and reduces energy costs paid to oil producing nations. Exporting copper means that the money flows to the US and not another country like Chile. Recycling plastic products reduces the need to import oil from Saudi Arabia. This is what global competition is all about.

The United States has indicated that its policy to improve the trade deficit with China is not through reduction of imports but the expansion of exports. The export of machinery, products, and food are the focus. What about #1?

There is no effort to support, encourage or expand recycling. Recycling is a local issue with little national coordination.

So what we have, due to the increase in the value of recyclables, is the unemployed guy in an old pick up truck cruising for metal discards before the garbage company gets to it. We have the homeless poking through garbage cans along Main Street instead of easily accessible recycling infrastructure. At Trash to Treasure, we ask people to bring in there stray power cords for the copper to raise funds for our operation.

Not that this is all bad. It's real. And it's the front line of the economic battle. But shouldn't somebody be looking out for #1?

Mass Stranding! Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are needed around the clock to assist with a mass stranding of pilot whales! The whales initially stranded on Thursday, May 5th off Cudjoe Key in the Florida Keys. Two of the healthiest whales were successfully released on Saturday in about 600 feet of water and we continue to follow them via satellite tags, for more information click here. Two whales remain in critical condition and two are in guarded condition. Supplies and volunteers are needed to help! Please see below for our wish list and information on volunteering.

Description:

Volunteers are needed to help remove litter from Hollywood North Beach Park. Recyclables collected will be separated and disposed of in the new recycling bins located along the beach area. Volunteers may also help promote the new beach recycling program to beach goers, and pass out educational material.

Volunteers must wear proper cleanup attire. T-shirts and shorts are acceptable. No flip flops. All volunteers must wear close-toed shoes. Volunteers wearing flip flops will not be allowed to participate. Minimum age to volunteer is eight (8), and an adult must accompany all minors. All volunteers must complete the Broward Workday Application before volunteering. Volunteers are recommended to wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring their own water. With the South Florida heat, a snack is also a good idea to bring.

Trash bags and gloves will be provided. A short safety meeting with cleanup directions will be given prior to the cleanup on the day of the event by staff. Look for the VOLUNTEERS banner at the sign-in table. Carpooling is highly recommended. Not only is it a good thing for the environment, but free parking at the beach is very limited.

For the second season of The GreenShows, models strutted down the runway showing off the best in sustainable, recycled and really awesome attire. This year the events were held at a new yet-to-be inhabited eco-friendly apartment building in New York City's East Village.

The GreenShows opened with a unique showcase of Gary Harvey's recycled couture. Newspapers and laundry bags rustled down the runway, along with old sweatshirts and baseball jackets repurposed into gowns.

The collection was designed to challenge people's perception of secondhand clothing. Gary, who was previously creative director of Levi Strauss and Dockers Europe, believes, "Too many garments end up in landfill sites. They are deemed aesthetically redundant and get discarded at the end of the season when there are often years of wear left." So, we say, long live the trench coat! Long live the baseball jacket! Long live whatever else Harvey uses to create his collections!

JUPITER, FL (April 18, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University, and more specifically its Jupiter campus, recently earned Tree Campus USA recognition for 2010 for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship. This is the first year FAU has been named a Tree Campus USA.

Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges, universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship. Tree Campus USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation and is supported by a grant from Toyota.

Volunteer Artists Needed to Beautify Port on Saturday, May 21

Broward County's Port Everglades is inviting volunteers of all ages and talents to test their creativity and painting skills on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 9 a.m. until noon in a community service project to transform recycled petroleum drums into decorative trash and recycling bins that will be used throughout the Port.

In its second year, "Keep Port Everglades Shipshape" is a port-wide campaign to encourage recycling and cleanliness at one of the world's leading cruise and cargo seaports, Port Everglades. The event also coincides with National Maritime Day, which is a national celebration to honor and recognize the maritime industry and its benefits to our country.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to paint their own creative designs on recycled petroleum drums that have been cleaned and prepared for painting. After the drums have dried, they will be placed throughout the Port to be used as decorative trash and recycling receptacles. Although basic paint and supplies will be provided, volunteers may bring their own non-oil based paints (latex, acrylic) and brushes if desired for a tailored design. Awards will be given for the most creative drums.
Families, students, seniors and groups are welcome. The event will take place from 9a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 21, 2011, in Parking Lot #19 located in the center of Port Everglades.

Participants over the age of 18 must present government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport, at the entrance gates to Port Everglades. Please wear comfortable clothing that can become stained by paint.

Learn basic designs while creating fun projects from clay. The workshop is two-part. The first three hour session will be creating your piece. Mary will fire the work in her kiln and return it for the second workshop where you will have an opportunity glaze and finish your piece.

Price includes clay and glazes. Please bring to first class: small plastic bucket, sponge, towel, basic pottery tools or Pottery Tool Kit (approx. $15), rolling pin, basic paint brushes. Apron optional.

Whether you are new to clay or have have experience, this will be a great workshop.

The 2nd Annual Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a giant clothing swap, DIY center, and creative extravaganza brought to you by The Dirty Peaches Clothing, Co. will be held on the 26th of February 2011 between the hours of 1:00 PM and 11:00 PM, ending in a recycled-fashion fashion show. The location where this event will be held is at 810 N.E. 4 Ave in Fort Lauderdale at the I.W.A.N. (Independant Working Artists Network) Gallery also known as "The Bubble". The founders and members of IWAN are consistently pushing beyond mainstream boundaries, thinking and acting outside the box, bringing together the undeniable gifts of the artists and those who can and will make a difference. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a national non profit event that happens within groups in communities all over the country. The event is sponsored by Yudu. Here in sunny South Florida, the Swap-O-Rama-Rama event is brought to you by the Dirty Peaches Clothing Company, a hip, eco-fashion clothing line which uses 100% recycled materials, in collaboration with the Trash 2 Treasure Creative Reuse Center, one of the for-front non-profits in South Florida which simultaneously helps with recycling and the arts. At these events you bring a bag of clothing you no longer wear or just don't want anymore and you go through other people's unwanted goods and find your own treasures. If you like it the way it is, great! Keep it. Take it home and enjoy your new clothes. There are also sewing stations set up, complete with designers to help you deconstruct and reconstruct your finds, make them your own. There is a YUDU screen printing booth, which features an easy way for you to add a design of your choice, which were designed by the participants, to your new wardrobe finds. There's a tie-dye station for you to practice the newest, retro trend!

There is also live music by Amy Shaw, Brady Newbill, Sam Friend and Travalonia, particpant-taught DIY (Do-It-Yourself) workshops all day long which teach you how to make different recycle crafts like vinyl wrist cuffs made out of old record albums and posh necklaces out of old t-shirts, fabulous food vendors, and more.

The fee is $5 when you bring a bag of clothing until 5pm. And $10 without a bag of clothing or after 5pm. There is absolutely NO COST for any thing once you are INSIDE the event. You can literally walk in for $5 and leave with as much as your arms will carry of a complete custom wardrobe!!

ALSO!!!!!! This year, we will have a very SPECIAL GUEST attending the event. Wendy Tremayne, founder of this international event, will be attending our Swap-O-Rama-Rama. Camp Live Oak, the only ACA accredited camp in Broward County, has been offering award-winning, educational outdoor programs for over 20 years in two local state parks. TerraCycle pays for these materials and Broward College uses the revenue to fund the Michelle Lawless Scholarship which provides tuition for a student majoring in Environmental Science.

Papier Mache Class Starts January 8

The first of our workshops at our new STUDIO location behind the Center (1064 NW 53rd St) kicks off this Saturday January 8 at 10 am until 12 pm.

This first of a 4 weeks of workshops every Saturday for Papier Mache creations will focus on designing an idea and building the base structure. Following Saturdays will have you getting your hands into the papier mache, and finally painting and embellishing.

Suggested LOVE donation of $5 for T2T members (their kids free) and $10 for non-members (kids $3). A family event recommended for supervised kids ages 4 and up.

Trash to Treasure Teams with Haiti Orphanage to Provide Supplies

Recently, Trash to Treasure teamed up with the Renmen Foundation to get much needed supplies to Haiti. A total of 1000 pounds of material from T2T went to vital projects in the distressed nation.

Much of the weight was for tile to be placed on a floor at Renmen's orphanage. We also sent various medical and everyday supplies.

City Link Beerfest 2010, December 3, Huizenga Plaza 6 -11

For the third year in a row, Trash to Treasure is teaming up with CityLink for Beerfest on December 3 at Huizenga Plaza in Downtown Fort Lauderdale from 6-11.

Trash to Treasure has once again be chosen as the nonprofit beneficiary of the event.

Since the event generates large amounts of recyclable material, T2T works with CityLink to facilitate recycling. T2T volunteers collect bottles, cardboard, bottle caps, and wine corks from the event vendors. Recycling containers are put out to collect the plastic sample cups.

SWS will recycle the cardboard and bottles. Edge Logistics will recycle the sample cups. Trash to Treasure will collect bottle caps and wine corks for reuse.

Last year, we diverted 80% of the waste from the event.

Day of the Dead Events

PROP WAREHOUSE OPEN TO PUBLIC FOR ARTISTIC RECYCLING PROGRAM

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL SEPTEMBER 25, 2010 - Sixth Star Entertainment and Marketing and Trash to Treasure Creative Reuse Center have joined forces to recycle used props and scenic décor leftover from special events and transform them into works of art. For the first time, Sixth Star will open its warehouse to artists and the general public to tour 20,000 square feet of “treasure”. Items run the gamut and include holiday lights, Styrofoam shapes, 4’x8’ painted scenic theatrical flats and cut outs, metal and plastic pieces, and even some household items. Visitors will preview the prop and scenic warehouse during the upcoming F.A.T. Village Artwalk on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 7pm-11pm. They will return on Sunday, September 26, 2010 between 10am and 2pm to collect items that will be recycled and repurposed into works of art. Representatives from Trash to Treasure will be on site to assist the public and answer questions about their program. The efforts are coordinated through a partnership Sixth Star has developed with Trash to Treasure Creative Reuse Center, a 501c3 not for profit organization. Doug Jones, President of Sixth Star stated, “Sustainability and supporting our local arts community is important to Sixth Star and this is a perfect project for us to support.”

F.A.T. Village Art Walks feature open galleries and special theatre events. They are held on the last Saturday of each month at 505 NW 1st Avenue, Ft Lauderdale (F.A.T. Village).

Simply Puppets came into existence in early 2000 as a platform for the Goboff family to write plays, make puppets and perform together.

Message from Trash to Treasure: Still Going Strong

Many of you have expressed concern about Trash to Treasure with the closing of the thrift store.

While the thrift store did not generate the levels of income that we had hoped, we actually made money on the venture.

Trash to Treasure's Board is looking for ways to reach the next level of sustainability. We are exploring multiple options. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

We remain extremely solvent and we are here to stay. We continue to partner with major organizations to raise funds and promote reduce, reuse, recycle. As most of you know we recently teamed with Whole Foods Fort Lauderdale and their 5% day. Our Trash2Art event was our most successful yet. We are involved with a matching grant fund-raising campaign with Jack Johnson's Ohana Foundation. Once again this year, we will team up the the Tribune Company for the CityLink Beerfest.

There has never been a better time to become a member of Trash to Treasure. Memberships play an important role in our success. About half of our income is derived from them. Please spread the word about our organization.

Jack Johnson's "To the Sea" concert tour's profits will go to national and local nonprofits. Trash to Treasure has been selected by the Jack Johnson All At Once Foundation to receive a matching grant up to $2,500.

100% of Jack Johnson's 2008 tour profits were used to establish the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, an endowment founded by Jack and Kim Johnson to support environmental, art and music education now and into the future. As part of the 2010 world tour, the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation will offer direct and matching donations to All At Once partner non-profits. Jack Johnson will once again donate 100% of his 2010 tour profits to charity.

Trash to Treasure Expands TerraCycle Upcycle Items by Teaming with Broward College!

To increase the amount of materials upcycled by TerraCycle , Trash to Treasure is partnering with Broward College to collect ALL of TerraCycle's program materials. College students earning service hours will sort and prepare materials for shipping to TerraCycle.

TerraCycle pays nonprofits for materials collected. All revenue will go to the Michelle Lawless Scholarship Fund. The Fund provides scholarships to females pursuing an Environmental Science A.A.

Check out the list. You can bring the materials to Trash to Treasure during our Creative Reuse Center hours. If you have any questions, email T2T friend Jarrod Hersh . He works at BC and is coordinating the program over there.

Trash to Treasure friend Robin Merrill recently opened Mission Gifts/Upper Room Gallery at 1200 East Las Olas Boulevard. Mission Gifts is a unique gallery/store dedicated to selling the works of the poor from third world countries. Many of these people were formally in the sex trade industry. Missionaries provide living wages for the workers. Most of the products are made from reclaimed/reused items.

To celebrate their opening, Mission Gifts has generously offered to hold a fundraising event with Trash to Treasure this Friday, April 9 from 7-11 PM. This is a great opportunity for you to see what Mission Gifts has to offer. Hor d'ourves and a tremendous organic wine will be served for a suggested $5 donation. Also, Trash to Treasure crew members will be there to talk "trash".

This a great opportunity to stock up on the unique gifts that Mission Gifts offers. Also, Mission Gift sells high-end unique items that interior designers and architects can integrate into LEED designs or appoint luxurious interiors.
