TerraCycle Update 11/2015

The items taken by TerraCycle are dependent on corporate sponsorship.  As such, the items accepted will change from time to time.  See below for the latest flyer:

Some previously popular items are no longer accepted:

  • Dairy items such as yogurt containers and cheese packaging
  • Candy wrappers
  • Cookie wrappers
  • Flexible coffee containers

Rigid plastic such as yogurt containers can go in your recycling cart.

Trash to Treasure is proud to work with the Broward College TerraCycle program.  Funds raised through the program to go support an Environmental Science scholarship.  Additionally, the program collects wires which are given to T2T for fund raising.  A great partnership!

Thanks for your support.

TerraCycle Update 7/13

T2T Volunteers, Members and Donors,

I am asking for all of your help to support the Broward College TerraCycle program. Currently BC is the highest collecting college in the country. In effort to maintain this status we set an aggressive goal of 300,000 items by December. Currently we are around 120,000 items and we have a way to go. The Summer months are slower as fewer classes are offered.

Please help us bridge the gap and bring your TerraCycle items to T2T from the attached list. We get lots of yogurt cups but few Toothbrushes, Toothpaste Tubes, Dried up Pens, Granola and Candy bar wrappers, Chip Bags, Shoes, and Scotch tape cores.

Please share this list with everyone you know. It would be FANTASTIC if the T2T TerraCycle bin was at capacity every week.

I greatly appreciate your support as we reduce waste and support the Michelle Lawless Scholarship. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Trash2Art 2012 Reception is a Zero Waste event.

Thanks to our partners for helping make the Trash2Art 2012 reception a zero waste event for the second year in a row.

By employing different tactics, we are able to eliminate any discards from entering the waste stream.

Our food sponsor Whole Foods, Fort Lauderdale is providing finger foods to reduce the need for dishes and flatware.  The dishes that we do have are reusable.

Choice, Broward County's facilities recycler, will recycle the traditional single-stream materials like wine bottles and carboard boxes.

Florida Atlantic University's Mission Green volunteers will be on hand to direct visitors what to do with their trash. At the end of the evening, they will take the compostable waste to their FAU compost facility to be used in their urban gardens.

Our plastic cups, left overs from the CityLink Beerfest,  will be upcycled by TerraCycle through our partnership with Broward College.  Revenue for the cups from TerraCycle funds an Environmental Science Schloarship.

Thanks to Rehrig-Pacific for providing carts for the event.

We'll see you at the reception, Thursday, August 16 at ArtServe 1350 East Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 6-8PM

CityLink Boca Beerfest, March 2, 2012, Mizner Park

Is it that time again?  Yes, the CityLink Beerfest invades Boca Raton and Mizner Park.  Same game, same fun.  OK, so no Drunk Santa and his helpers.  But still, beer, great music, and more.

Trash to Treasure is the charity that benefits from the event.  We coordinate the recycling which results in  90% of the waste diverted by weight.  We collect cardboard, aluminum cans, glass bottles, ice bags, sample cups, bottle caps, plastic bottles and wine corks.

This time the sample cups will be recycled through Broward College's TerraCycle Program.  Money from the program funds an Environmental Science scholarship.  Also, thanks to our other recycling partners SWS and Edge Recycling.

CityLink has the only GREEN Beerfest in South Florida.

Thanks to our volunteers, who do work very hard for beer, for their awesome efforts.  Here is an example:

Vote for Broward College's TerraCycle Bin

Broward  College was recently selected as one of four finalists in a nationwide contest sponsored by TerraCycle. The contest challenged TerraCycle participants to design a TerraCycle waste collection station using discarded “upcycled” waste.  Broward College students came up with the idea of creating a bin out of VHS tapes.  BC's bin was selected as one of the 10 finalist.

Now, the public will vote on a winner over the next couple weeks, ending October 27th.    Please vote so Broward College can be named the Grand Prize Winner. All proceeds will help benefit the Michelle Lawless Environmental Science Scholarship Fund.

As many of you already know, you can also drop off your TerraCycle items at Trash to Treasure.  Check out the latest list here.

Want to build with VCR tapes?  Trash to Treasure has plenty.  We got some samples in the warehouse.  Tapes and Liquid Nails is all you need.

Here are some pictures of the process.

Trash to Treasure Expands TerraCycle Upcycle Items by Teaming with Broward College!

To increase the amount of materials upcycled by TerraCycle , Trash to Treasure is partnering with Broward College to collect ALL of TerraCycle's program materials.  College students earning service hours will sort and prepare materials for shipping to TerraCycle.

TerraCycle pays nonprofits for materials collected.  All revenue will go to the Michelle Lawless Scholarship Fund. The Fund provides scholarships to females pursuing an Environmental Science A.A.

Check out the list.  You can bring the materials to Trash to Treasure during our Creative Reuse Center hours.  If you have any questions, email T2T friend Jarrod Hersh .  He works at BC and is coordinating the program over there.

T2T adds Frito Lay Products to TerraCycle collection

Sure your New Year's Resolution was to lose weight by eating less Dorito's.  But who are we fooling?  We are adding Frito-Lay bags to our TerraCycle products.  Click here for a list.

TerraCycle will pay us 2 cents for each bag we collect and turn them into accessories.  Bring them by during our regular hours.

Also, check out the other things Frito-Lay is doing with their Sun Chips bags.  Starting in 2010, Sun Chips will be producing the bags from plant based materials which will degrade overtime when left in the environment. These innovative bags are designed to fully decompose in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost bin or pile.

Another good note, Frito-Lay has reduced the material used to make their bags by 10%.

I think I'll go eat some onion free Funyuns.

Trash to Treasure also collects stackable yogurt containers, juice pouches, granola/energy bar wrappers, and cookie wrappers.  For more information click here.

TerraCycle Book is out

The founder of our reuse partner TerraCycle has a book out. Tom Szaky's Revolution in a Bottle: How TerraCycle is Redefining Green Business tells the story of this unique organization. Here is the USA Today story.

As most of you know, T2T accepts 6 and 8 oz yogurt containers, cookie wrappers, juice pouches, and granola bar wrappers for TerraCycle. These items are "upcycled" into various accessories.

If you want to buy the book, use GoodShop and part of the sales price will go to T2T. The price is the same and book outlets like Amazon.com are there. All at the same low prices.

TerraCycle has Worm Poop on Sale

Here is a note we received from our partner TerraCycle:

To the TerraCycle community,

This is a letter of thanks.

Over the last year, you have helped TerraCycle accomplish some amazing things – together we have kept more than 20,000,000 drink pouches and 11,000,000 cookie wrappers from landfills. Because of the success of those programs, we have developed new programs to collect and divert more than a dozen waste streams, now including candy wrappers, chip bags, corks, cereal liners and more. More than 30,000 locations have signed up to collect, which means that more than 4 MILLION people are participating in the TerraCycle revolution.

In the next month TerraCycle will launch our new website, and soon we’ll request that you update your profile so that our new upgraded site can serve you better. To thank you for what you have done to date—and to honor the large garden we have so far created together—I’m making an offer to express my gratitude and to help your garden flourish.

For a limited time, I’m pleased to offer you TerraCycle’s first product, our award winning All Purpose Worm Poop Plant Food, the world’s first product made from waste and packaged in waste, at the lowest price we’ve ever made it available:

· $3.50 each if you order 1-4 bottles (a 30% discount!)

· $2.50 each if you order 6 bottles or more (a 50% discount!)

All you have to do is go to a dedicated TerraCycle website, www.shoponlygreen.com and use the special code GROW. As part of my thanks to you, and the students, friends and family who are collecting, feel free to share the website and password with your colleagues, and I’ll keep it open through July. The product stays good for a few years, so feel free to buy as much as you want. May all of our gardens flourish.

Thanks for being part of TerraCycle.
Cheers,
Tom
