Trash to Treasure Expands Relationship with Better World Books

Better World Books collects and sells books online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. With more than 8 million new and used titles in stock, they are a self-sustaining, triple-bottom-line company that creates social, economic, and environmental value for all stakeholders.

Trash to Treasure takes in books.  If Better World is interested, we send the books to them for resale.  Better World pays Trash to Treasure a percentage when the books sell to help fund our operations.

Now, you can further help Trash to Treasure and literacy programs around the world by purchasing new and used books from Better World by clicking on the Better World banner on our web site.  T2T will receive a percentage on books sold through the link.

Take a look at what Better World Books is doing:

Literacy

    * Raised over $10 million for Literacy including
$5.5 million for over 80 literacy and education nonprofits
          $4.5 million for libraries nationwide
    * Contributed more than $2 million to college service clubs who have run book drives
    * Directly sent more than 5 million books to Books for Africa, the National Center for Family Literacy, and Feed the Children
    * Collected over 63 million books through active book drives at over 2,300 colleges and universities and collections from over 3,000 libraries

Recycling

Better World never throws away a book. Any book that cannot find a proper home is recycled.  Better World has re-used or recycled over 70 million pounds of books - that's 57 million books!

Carbon Offsets

Every order has the option to be shipped carbon balanced for just a few cents extra.  So far, 23,000 tons of carbon offsets have been purchased.

Better World Books partners with 3Degrees, a leading green power and carbon balancing firm to secure verified carbon offsets and RECs from wind farms. Specifically they are using  carbon offsets to support the Tatanka Wind Farm, the largest renewable-energy project in North and South Dakota. This landmark wind farm will generate enough clean energy to power more than 60,000 homes!

So remember, head over to www.trash2treasurefl.org to get started.  Remember us this holiday season.

Vote for Broward College's TerraCycle Bin

Broward  College was recently selected as one of four finalists in a nationwide contest sponsored by TerraCycle. The contest challenged TerraCycle participants to design a TerraCycle waste collection station using discarded “upcycled” waste.  Broward College students came up with the idea of creating a bin out of VHS tapes.  BC's bin was selected as one of the 10 finalist.

Now, the public will vote on a winner over the next couple weeks, ending October 27th.    Please vote so Broward College can be named the Grand Prize Winner. All proceeds will help benefit the Michelle Lawless Environmental Science Scholarship Fund.

As many of you already know, you can also drop off your TerraCycle items at Trash to Treasure.  Check out the latest list here.

Want to build with VCR tapes?  Trash to Treasure has plenty.  We got some samples in the warehouse.  Tapes and Liquid Nails is all you need.

Here are some pictures of the process.
