Colbert takes on Water Bottle Giant Nestle

The Colbert Report takes on the water bottle industry exposing  Nestle's desire to rule the bottled spring water industry.

Check out a list of Nestle's attempt to profit from the world's basic human right to water here.

Did you know that bottled water is less regulated than local tap water?

And most water bottles are not recycled.  It's time for a refresher from our friends at the Story of Stuff.

Call for Artists: Trash 2 Art 2013 to be held at Studio 18 in the Pines - December 3 - 28, 2013

Detour Butterfly Professional Adult 1st Place 2012

Here at Trash 2 Treasure Creative Reuse Center - Fort Lauderdale we are busy prepping for our annual art event -- Trash 2 Art.
What started out as an idea to simply raise a bit of operating capital and have some fun growing awareness for our scrappy organization quickly grew into what is now considered the premier re-purposed art show in South Florida.
This year we're taking our show to Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines.  We'll be celebrating with our official opening in conjunction with their first Friday open house on December 6, 2013, from 7p - 9p.

The complete exhibition will run from December 3 - December 28, 2013 at the facility at Studio 18 in the Pines, 1101 Poinciana Drive, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025.  For the third year, this will be a juried exhibition with cash prizes to the winners in professional, amateur, and student categories.

Intake for artists will be Saturday, November 30th, from 10am - 2pm and then again on Monday, December 2nd from 10am - 2pm.  Commit early by paying on-line and save $5 on the entrance fee. Adults commit to a Trash to Treasure membership and your entry is half price.
Artists may register through this link here:  http://www.trash2treasurefl.org/T2ART.php
Watch for updates on the specific festivities over on our Facebook page along with nearly 2000 supportive  "fans" at https://www.facebook.com/Trash2TreasureFL.
Do you have an idea you'd like to share to add some excitement to our event? Please contact us at 888-828-8242.
And, since no event like this is possible without community partners, we are actively seeking sponsors at this time. If you are a like-minded business owner or individual who wants to support this event and/or the other community services that Trash 2 Treasure provides, please contact us at 888-828-8242 or email us at info@trash2treasurefl.org.
As we receive confirmation from our partners, we'll be sharing their special message of support here and through our growing network of collaborators.
And remember, all ages are welcome to participate as artists and all mediums are welcome. Our only requirement is that the materials used must be 75% recycled or re-purposed.
So, register here: http://www.trash2treasurefl.org/T2ART.php, mark your calendar for 11/30 Intake and 12/6 for the reception, and now go create!

Arsenic and . . . Apple Juice?

From Food Safety News July 15, 2013

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday proposed a limit for
arsenic in apple juice, two years after testing by Dr. Oz and Consumer Reports spurred widespread consumer concern about the presence of the compound in juice products.

The Environmental Protection Agency already has an arsenic limit for tap water, but the FDA’s new proposal is the first such federal standard for a food product. The proposed limit, or “action level,” for inorganic arsenic —  the harmful form of the chemical that is a known human carcinogen – matches the EPA’s current threshold for inorganic arsenic at 10 parts per billion.

Tips for reusing a variety of paper bags

Creative Recycling: Crafts, Activities, and Tips

Quick Crafts and Recycling Tips
Here are great tips for reusing a variety of paper bags.
  • You can cut them open and use them to wrap packages that are to be mailed (make sure the unprinted side is out).
  • You can also wrap presents using paper bags. Make sure the unprinted side is out and then decorate with paint, markers, crayons, stickers, or anything else you like.
  • Use them to protect the work surface while doing messy craft projects.
  • Make an almost-instant pinata by filling the bag with treats, decorating it with some paint and streamers, and hanging it up!
  • Cut into squares or rectangles and flatten (try a warm iron). Use as stationary or drawing paper.
  • Create heavy-duty paper airplanes.
  • Line your walkway with paper bags luminaries.
  • Large bags are great for making kites.
  • Cut out 2 eyes holes and decorate the bag to be a mask.
  • You can also cut a slit down one side, cut out a neck hole and two arm holes, and wear it as a vest.
  • Cut into long strips, fold, and cut out paper chain people, stars, hearts, etc.
  • Paper bags are great for making book covers.
  • Paper bags are also great for making pattern templates.
