Eco-Schools USA
National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to Lead U.S. Eco-Schools Program
Eco-Schools is an internationally acclaimed program that provides a framework to help educators integrate sustainable principles throughout their schools and curriculum.
The Eco-Schools program was started in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) with support by the European Commission. It was identified by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as a model initiative for Education for Sustainable Development in 2003.
The Eco-Schools program strives to model environmentally sound practices, provide support for greening the curriculum and enhance science and academic achievement.
Additionally, it works to foster a greater sense of environmental stewardship among youth.
Eco-Schools is currently being implemented in more than 50 countries around the world.

Volunteer Opportunities at Trash-2-Art 2013
Volunteers Needed for Reception on Friday, 12/6
As you know, Trash-2-Art is coming up soon. (In case you would like more info, see

We are need volunteers to help with several different functions at the event.
- Greeters at reception desk, answering questions
- Recyclers – making sure items placed in recycling bins/compost bins, etc. are appropriate; promoting various recycling activities with attendees
- General Helpers – food/drink tables, helping with set up and decorations, clean-up afterwards
- Photographer/Video – taking pictures for use in post event promotions
The Exhibit and Reception will be held Studio 18 in the Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive in Pembroke Pines (within Howard C. Forman Health Campus).

Coastal Cleanup 9/21
Broward County participates in the annual International Coastal Cleanup,
sponsored by the Ocean
Conservancy. The Cleanup takes place in over 104 countries around
the world and typically on the 3rd Saturday of September.
The next event is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 9 a.m. until noon. Please dress appropriately for the weather, either rain or shine, as we will only cancel the Cleanup due to a tropical storm system resulting in a Watch or Warning. Call 954/519-1270 for cancellation information.
To participate, bring a hat, gloves, sunscreen and water to one of the cleanup site locations identified on the map below.

Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department staff worked with local municipalities and collected 7,171 pounds of trash from 13 cleanup site locations. Items collected ranged from baby toys to bio-hazardous waste. An estimated 82,000 pieces of trash were picked up with the number one trash item being cigarette butts. Over 34,000 butts were cleaned from the beaches and one site, which combined all the cigarette butts collected by the volunteers, filled a bag that weighed 10 pounds

If you are comfortable with public speaking, we have opportunities for you to share news about Trash 2 Treasure with the community. Sometimes, we are asked to make appearances at local events like a Girl Scouts event, green expo, a civic group, or an environmental event.We will provide training on environmental, recycling issues and T2T. Depending on the event, you may wish to take examples of repurposed materials with you to an event.

New River Cleanup Event on 9/29

At 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 29, 2013, Florida Atlantic University’s Florida Atlantic Planning Society (FAPS) will again be hosting a cleanup of the North Fork.
Wildlife Research Team plans to be there. Please call Donna Kazo to reserve a seat in their black canoes: 954.474.8194 begin_of_the_skype_highlightingnd_of_the_skype_highlighting. She will be leading a brief Canoeing 101 class before the event. Community Service hours are available to students.
