Coastal Cleanup 9/21

Broward County participates in the annual International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy. The Cleanup takes place in over 104 countries around the world and typically on the 3rd Saturday of September.

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 9 a.m. until noon. Please dress appropriately for the weather, either rain or shine, as we will only cancel the Cleanup due to a tropical storm system resulting in a Watch or Warning. Call 954/519-1270 for cancellation information.

To participate, bring a hat, gloves, sunscreen and water to one of the cleanup site locations identified on the map below.

2012 Coastal Cleanup Results

In September of 2012, 2,458 people volunteered their time to help clean the beaches in Broward County as part of the 27th Annual International Coastal Cleanup. Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department staff worked with local municipalities and collected 7,171 pounds of trash from 13 cleanup site locations. Items collected ranged from baby toys to bio-hazardous waste. An estimated 82,000 pieces of trash were picked up with the number one trash item being cigarette butts. Over 34,000 butts were cleaned from the beaches and one site, which combined all the cigarette butts collected by the volunteers, filled a bag that weighed 10 pounds
