FAU Day of Service 2015

Trash to Treasure once again teamed with the Weppner Center at Florida Atlantic University for their FAU Day of Service.  Students came out to help us complete some tasks to help our all-volunteer organization.

T2T's Board has alumni and is always eager to participate in activities with the College.

We were impressed when some students took it upon themselves to gather some money to buy some of the homeless around the Center some food.  When the students were in line at Publix, the person in front of them paid for the food they were purchasing.  As they were crossing the street, they saw them man and told him why they were purchasing the food.  Pay it forward!

Here is what Angela Baugher, Assistant Director of the FAU Weppner Center for LEAD & Service-Learning said about the students experience:

The students really enjoyed serving with you!  One student shared how you provided them money to buy a homeless man lunch.  They were blown away by your giving and kindness.  They shared it was their best service experience to date and this student has served with us many times in the past.  Thank you for being a true example of what service is to our students and for going out of your way to work with us even though you were getting a roof!  I hope to partner with Trash to Treasure again in the future!

Trash to Treasure is always in need of volunteers.  It can be one person or a whole group. Your task can be simple or complex.  It is up to you.   Do you have a special skill?  We can probably use it.

TRANSFORMING OUR SCHOOLS

 

When you look at our educational spaces, you see outdated buildings in need of repairs, burdened with unsafe toxins, dwindling budgets and outdated resources - in place of opportunity and progress.  The Green Apple Day of Service enables volunteers to transform all learning environments into safe, engaging and comfortable facilities that enhance kid’s ability to learn and teacher’s ability to teach.

The Green Apple Day of Service, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, gives parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects. Deerfield Beach Elementary Art Club and Deerfield Park Elementary will be selling hand painted rainbarrels for $25.  Help support our kids showcasing their creativity.  All proceeds go to the Art Clubs.  The acrylic paints and sealants are generously donated by Jerry's Artarama at 242 S. Mission Gifts Event

Trash to Treasure friend Robin Merrill recently opened Mission Gifts/Upper Room Gallery at 1200 East Las Olas Boulevard.  Mission Gifts is a unique gallery/store dedicated to selling the works of the poor from third world countries.  Many of these people were formally in the sex trade industry.  Missionaries provide living wages for the workers.  Most of the products are made from reclaimed/reused items.

To celebrate their opening, Mission Gifts has generously offered to hold a fundraising event with Trash to Treasure this Friday, April 9 from 7-11 PM.  This is a great opportunity for you to see what Mission Gifts has to offer.  Hor d'ourves and a tremendous organic wine will be served for a suggested $5 donation.  Also, Trash to Treasure crew members will be there to talk "trash".

Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare Miami-January 17,18,19, 22,23,24

Shakespeare Miami presents The Taming of the Shrew  January 17, 18, 19 at the Barnacle Historic State Park
in Coconut Grove and January 22, 23, 24 at  the Young Circle Arts Park in
Hollywood Florida.  The shows are FREE.

Like most nonprofits, Shakespeare Miami has had to deal with budget cuts.  Shakespeare's Colleen Stovall turned to Trash to Treasure for costume fabric.  Check out the costume journal.

Various nonprofits have memberships at Trash to Treasure.  Our materials allow these organization to stretch their dollar while integrating sustainable practices into their operations.

Each year, Shakespeare Miami donates the costumes to another nonprofit that provides them to other organizations throughout the country keeping the reuse concept alive.

Want to keep this service to other nonprofits going?  Only about a third of expenses comes from membership fees.  Contribute to T2T on our support page.  Or just send a check. We are an all volunteer organization.   All funds go to operations.

Beerfest Recycling Estimates

Another great Beerfest. Thanks to the Tribune for working with us to make it a green event.

Here's an estimate on the recycling:

Glass, Aluminum, and Plastic:      6,000 pounds
Cardboard:                                    3,000 pounds
Garbage:                                       2,000 pounds

That's 80% waste diversion.  Plus, we got a lot of bottle caps for the Center.

T2T teams with Tribune for Beerfest, December 4, Huzienga Plaza

Once again, under our corporate parent, South Florida Reuse and Recycling Institute, we are teaming with the Tribune Company for their annual Beerfest. This year it is called the Big "S" Beerfest as they promote the Sun-Sentinel, WSFL TV and southflorida.com

As usual, we will help make sure that the glass, cardboard, and plastic cups gets recycled. Also, this year we will be focusing on bottle caps. As many of you know, bottle caps are great for art and crafts projects and often go quickly at Trash to Treasure. The caps are challenge to clean up after the event, so a program to collect them will benefit everyone.

Chemical Reaction at FLIFF, Monday November 9, 7:30, Cinema Paradisio

Do you want dandelions . . . or cancer?

That's the question Americans who use lawn chemicals should be asking themselves.

To learn more about the disturbing facts which impact millions of Floridians, join us at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. The documentary "A Chemical Reaction" will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at Cinema Paradiso as part of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Many Americans will be surprised to find that many of the lawn chemicals that they are told are safe are not that different from Agent Orange -- so dangerous and potentially carcinogenic that they are banned in five countries and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

"A Chemical Reaction" tells the story of how one small town in Quebec set into motion the events that culminated in a ban on chemical pesticides for lawns throughout the province of Quebec.

This ban was fought in court by lawn care giant ChemLawn (now known as TruGreen) and others. Ultimately, the case went to the Supreme Court of Canada where the ban was upheld, and has since spread to other provinces and municipalities across Canada.

The documentary shows the people behind the ban are regular people. The movie (and the movement to stop using certain chemical pesticides) is winning supporters as it makes the rounds of film festivals in the United States and Canada.

Everyone who wants to reduce their exposure to potentially dangerous carcinogens should be interested in the movie and its message to take action in your community.

350.org Updates and T2T reminders

Please remember to note on your calendars that Trash to Treasure (T2T) will be closed on Oct 24th so that we may all participate in the 350 International Day of Climate of ACTION.

T2T is part of the local grassroots planning group and we have challenged individual's and groups to become CLIMATE CAPTAINS, and to bring 10 people to the event, making sure they are in the 350 logo tees, and bearing a sign representing their group. This is not only a good way to support climate protection initiatives, it is also a great way to promote your group pr business as part of a sustainable future. It's not too late to get involved.

T2T has formed a Climate Captain group as well and our goal is to get 35 people under the "T2T SUPPORTS 350 Climate Protection" banner. If you don't have time to form a group, consider joining our group and bringing your family and friends along. We feel that this is gathering will be especially empowering to kids, since we will have to pass the baton to them eventually to continue the democratic work of make the voice of the people heard by leaders.

Our event is designed to be positive, uplifting and responsibly vocal. Eight cities and Broward County have issued Proclamations honoring the day and encouraging citizen involvement. When the Town of Davie presented the Proclamation the other night, the council stood and led a standing ovation acknowledging the importance of the day and the work to be done---together.

All the details for the local event to be held at Museum of Discovery and Science from 10 -1pm are on our website. Pdf's of posters and flyers are also there, if you can print them out and continue spreading the word, that would be great.
