Trash to Treasure NO LONGER ACCEPTING PLASTIC, FILM, OR STYROFOAM

Since our inception, we have looked for opportunities to push the envelope in recycling in our community.  As such, we feel that we have brought about changes in our community for the better.  This success has resulted in diminishing the need to provide these services.

Rigid Plastics

Our plastic recycler is no longer in business.  However, since the beginning of this program, rigid plastics have been added to most single-stream recycling programs.  Here are the links for Broward, Palm Beach and Dade counties.

CityLink Beerfest 2012 to Benefit Trash to Treasure

It's that time again beer fans. City Link Beer Fest and Trash to Treasure team up to raise revenue for T2T and recycle 90% of the event's waste. This is south Florida's only GREEN Beer Fest.  The event is Friday, December 07, 2012 at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale.

T2T volunteers coordinate the recycling of bottles, cans, cardboard, ice bag film, bottle caps, and corks.

CityLink Boca Beerfest, March 2, 2012, Mizner Park

 

Is it that time again?  Yes, the CityLink Beerfest invades Boca Raton and Mizner Park.  Same game, same fun.  OK, so no Drunk Santa and his helpers.  But still, beer, great music, and more.

Trash to Treasure is the charity that benefits from the event.  We coordinate the recycling which results in  90% of the waste diverted by weight.  We collect cardboard, aluminum cans, glass bottles, ice bags, sample cups, bottle caps, plastic bottles and wine corks.  

This time the sample cups will be recycled through Broward College's TerraCycle Program.  Money from the program funds an Environmental Science scholarship.  Also, thanks to our other recycling partners SWS and Edge Recycling.

CityLink has the only GREEN Beerfest in South Florida.

City Link Beerfest 2010, December 3, Huizenga Plaza 6 -11

For the third year in a row, Trash to Treasure is teaming up with CityLink for Beerfest on December 3 at Huizenga Plaza in Downtown Fort Lauderdale from 6-11.

Trash to Treasure has once again be chosen as the nonprofit beneficiary of the event.

Since the event generates large amounts of recyclable material, T2T works with CityLink to facilitate recycling.  T2T volunteers collect bottles, cardboard, bottle caps, and wine corks from the event vendors.  Recycling containers are put out to collect the plastic sample cups.

SWS will recycle the cardboard and bottles.  Edge Logistics will recycle the sample cups.  Trash to Treasure will collect bottle caps and wine corks for reuse.

Last year,  we diverted 80% of the waste from the event.

Southern Waste Systems provides mulch to our Community Garden

A special thanks to Southern Waste Systems (SWS) for providing mulch to our community garden. The mulch, rich in nutrients, will help establish our new garden. This mulch was made from vegetative waste collected by SWS.

Most consumers have the wrong conception about mulch. The primary purpose of mulch is to add nutrients to the soil and help with moisture retention. Too many people buy mulch based on aesthetics.

Why isn't more curbside yardwaste being used in the community? Fear and incorrect perceptions.

Perception: Mulch will have seeds and weeds that will affect the yard's plants.
Reality: Mulch is exposed to high temperatures from the mulching process and from stockpiling which kills pathogens and seeds. Plant will grow into it but not out of it.

Perception: Mulch is not attractive enough.
Reality: The plants in your yard should be the star not your fire engine red mulch

Perception: Store bought mulch is better for plants
Reality: Many mulch's contain wood which is low in nutrients and often contains chemicals.

Perception: The community would complain if curbside mulch was used in public areas.
Reality: Government pays for collection of yard waste in the community and then pays again for mulch.

Perception: The community would not be interested in free mulch from curbside collections
Reality: "Did someone say free?"

Finally, do not buy Cypress Mulch. It is the worst thing you can do for Florida!
